Animal lovers protest Manatee Animal Services

Bradenton, Florida -- In Manatee County, more than two dozen people turned out Thursday night to protest the county's animal services.

Animal rights advocates gathered outside the county's administration building as commissioners met inside to discuss the budget. Protesters are calling for an overhaul of animal services including new leadership.

Protesters also say Animal Services is not living up to its No Kill pledge claiming four dogs were euthanized this week.

Guardian Angels help Bradenton family address citations

Bradenton, Florida -- The case started last month when the Greer family of nine children in a 100-year-old house got building code citations and were told to make repairs. So, they started with a patriotic paint job that got them some more help.

"I want to salute every time I go by," said Guardian Angel President Bobbie Price.

The house, in the 3000 block of Riverview Boulevard in Bradenton, now is a symbol of America with the new paint job. And neighbors say the house is symbolic of the family.

Skydiving to save a community center

Anna Maria Island, Florida -- Falling out of the sky to save a community center. Manatee County Commissioner John Chappie and assistant state attorney Lisa Chittaro decided to skydive to help the Anna Maria Island Community Center.

The center is about to run out of money because many of its donors no longer live in the area.

People with the center are hopeful fundraisers like this will help bring awareness to the situation.

Deputies say man accidentally shoots and kills friend

A man shot and killed his best friend, his roommate, by accident. It happened Saturday night around 8:00 in Bradenton off 50th Avenue West and 30th Street West.

Manatee County deputies said 22-year-old Kyle Guessford was showing off his new flashlight gun mount to his friends at his apartment. As he went to turn on the flashlight, the gun discharged and shot his roommate in the head, 22-year-old Austin Brunson.

Owners of animal sanctuary face more charges

Manatee County, Florida -- The owners of a troubled animal sanctuary are facing more criminal charges.

10 News learned Wednesday the State Attorney's Office has added animal cruelty charges to include 77 more dogs, one cat and five horses. On Thursday, the SAO amended the charges bringing the total to 99.

Alan and Sheree Napier are also each charged with one count of scheming to defraud. Sheree is also facing one count of solicitation, while Alan faces two charges of solicitation.

Family hit with code violations paints American flag on house

Bradenton, Florida -- The Greer family was handed a citation mentioning mold, mildew and the need for paint on the outside of their home. So the family picked up cans of paint and brushes, and went to work painting an American flag across the front of the entire home.
