'Splash' into summer with museum's new water-themed film series

Bradenton, Florida -- The South Florida Museum has announced two new themed series as part of its popular Film Fridays program: “Splash” and “Contenders.” Splash will premiere on Friday, July 1 and run most Fridays through August 12, 2011. The six-film series offers viewers a chance to learn about the planet’s most abundant and important substance, water, through a variety of documentaries about water sports, environmental issues and aquatic exploration.

Contenders will run every Friday from August 26 through Sept. 30. The six featured films will showcase the spirit of competition in its many forms with compelling modern-day documentaries portraying real people struggling to come out on top. All Film Fridays screenings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the South Florida Museum’s all-digital Bishop Planetarium Theater.

“Since the start of our Film Fridays program in January, the public has shown great interest in the Sunshine State, London Calling and Creature Features series,” said Jeff Rodgers, South Florida Museum’s Director of Education who oversees a variety of cultural programming. “Film Fridays provides the community with an affordable cinema experience right in the heart of downtown Bradenton. The Splash and Contenders series will continue presenting entertaining and thought-provoking films in our unique theater.”

Film Fridays is a year-round South Florida Museum program which showcases films and documentaries focusing on cultural, social and scientific topics based on themed multi-week series on most Friday evenings.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and guests are welcome to enjoy a selection of beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks available for purchase prior to and during the screening. Tickets to each film are $5/person for General Admission with discounted rates of $3/person for Museum Members. Group rates are also available for parties of 15 or more people. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended. Sweaters or jackets are recommended as the theater may be cold.
