Museum hosts London Calling Film Series and 'British invasion'

Bradenton, Florida -- The South Florida Museum is pleased to partner with cultural entities throughout downtown Bradenton this spring as the 1960s era and Great Britain is celebrated through a variety of cultural programs.  The Museum will present a British Invasion! Cultural Celebration on Friday, April 15 and continue its popular Film Fridays program, with the London Calling film series, most Fridays from April 1 – May 13.

These programs have been created in conjunction with Realize Bradenton’s Shout! the ‘60s collaborative effort which showcases 14 groovy events at downtown Bradenton facilities this spring.

The British Invasion! Cultural Celebration will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 15 throughout the South Florida Museum facility. The event will feature live Beatles music by the Glass Onion Band, beat poetry, 60s British cars from the Suncoast British Car Club, vintage scooters, go-go dancers and more. Event attendees are encouraged to dress to the period and bring their personal cameras to capture a photo souvenir at a special “Royal Wedding” photo booth recognizing Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding scheduled for April 29 at Westminster Abbey. Guests are encouraged to submit photos taken at the event to Realize Bradenton’s Shout the 60s photo contest. (See www.RealizeBradenton.com for contest details.)

“At a time when so many Americans seem fascinated by the upcoming ‘Royal Wedding,’ we are thrilled to present this cultural program saluting Great Britain,” said Amara Cocilovo, Public Programs Manager at the South Florida Museum. “From the best of Beatles Music and mod culture to a literary reflection on an era that shaped our culture, the Museum will be the hippest party in town on ‘tax day’ this year.” Fete Catering & Ballroom at Polo Grill will offer old-fashioned English fish & chips as well as sausages & Yorkshire pudding (Toad in the Hole) from "across the pond."

Tickets include food and entertainment. Beer and wine will be available to purchase. Advance ticket prices (available through April 11) are $25/person for general admission, $15/person for Museum Members and $10/person for kids ages 4-12. After April 11, prices are $35/person for general admission, $25/person for Museum Members and $15/person for kids ages 4-12. Children ages 3 and younger receive free admission with no food tickets. For British Invasion! reservations, contact Amara Cocilovo 941-746-4131, ext. 11 or acocilovo@southfloridamuseum.org

The London Calling film series, a seven-film series exploring British culture, will premiere Friday, April 1 and run most Fridays through May 13, 2011. These films represent a pivotal point in history, as London’s swinging style made its mark upon America and the world.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and guests are welcome to enjoy a selection of beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks available for purchase prior to and during the screening. All film screenings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Museum’s Bishop Planetarium Theater. Tickets to each film are $5/person for General Admission with discounted rates of $3/person for Museum Members. Group rates are also available for parties of 15 or more people. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended. Sweaters or jackets are recommended as the theater may be cold.
