Man arms himself with cooler lid, dustpan against deputy

Bradenton, Florida -- Investigators say a man took up some unusual weapons when approached by a Manatee County Sheriff's deputy.

Deputies were called to a Bradenton residence early Wednesday morning, in response to a call of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, 29-year-old Chris Conard fled the scene.

After the police left, Conard reportedly returned and deputies were again called out to the scene.  As Deputy Matt Betrand was interviewing the person who called for police help, he noticed Conard hiding near a car in the front yard.

Betrand called out for Conard to come out and speak with him, when Conard reportedly became aggressive, picked up a cooler lid, and began swinging it as he walked toward the deputy.

Betrand tried unsuccessfully to take Conard into custody, and Conard then armed himself with a metal dust pan. Fearing he'd be hit by the pan, the deputy moved away from Conard and then deployed his taser.

Conard was struck in the back, and was taken into custody. He continued to be combative, and reportedly spit on and struck another deputy as he was secured.

Conard faces charges of obstruction, assault on a law enforcement officer and battery on a law enforcement officer.
