Manatee County, Florida -- Beginning Monday, May 21, the sheriff’s office announced it will be stepping up enforcement on drivers not wearing their seat belts as part of the national Click it or Ticket campaign.

National statistics show seat belt usage saved more than 12,500 vehicle occupants in 2010.  However, in the same year, 51 percent of the 22,187 crash fatality victims were not wearing seat belts.

While this year’s Click it or Ticket runs from May 21 through June 3, motorists should know that deputies are enforcing seat belt laws year round.

Traffic app helps holiday shoppers

Before you head out to the mall this year for Christmas shopping keep in mind that you can take a look at what traffic looks like before you get on the highway.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has an app for that.

The Florida 511 app now features traffic camera views that show crashes, congestion and other incidents on all of Florida's interstates and roll roads. The app uses the iPhone's GPS tracking to provide you with traffic information within miles of your location.
