Longboat Key, FL -- People who like to hitch a ride on the Longboat Key Trolley will have to wait a bit longer for the service and finish their rides earlier in the evening; the trolley's schedule is about to change.

Sarasota and Manatee County transit officials have agreed to reduce the hours of service for the trolley.

Starting some time in March, the trolley will run every hour, instead of every 30 minutes like it does now.

Trolley service will also end three hours earlier at 8 p.m.

Sarasota County transit planner Sarah Blanchard says the cuts in service are based on ridership numbers and a desire for cost savings.

And once the changes are made, transit officials will study the impact.

"We will monitor it and also work on marketing to encourage ridership," says Blanchard.

The trolley operates everyday and runs between downtown Sarasota and Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island.

Transit officials have not yet decided exactly when the service hours will change, but they expect that to happen in March.
