Bradenton, FL -- For fans of the Bradenton Marauders, the upcoming season may feature just as much excitement off the field as on it.


The Pittsburgh Pirates Class A affiliate has announced its giveaway schedule for 2011.


It starts on opening night, April 8th against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, with magnetic schedule giveaway, along with post-game fireworks.

GAINESVILLE, Fla., (March 15, 2011) – Drivers from the Southeast Division in the NHRA Summit Racing Series gathered at Gainesville Raceway for the annual Race of Champions event.  Run in conjunction with the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals, the 2010 top points earners from each track in the Southeast Division faced off to be crowned the winner of their class in the Race of Champions on Sunday.  Sunshine Dragstrip, Clearwater, Fla., and sister track, Bradenton Motorsports Park, Bradenton, Fla., swept the event this weekend by having drivers from their tracks win all four competing classes. 

Mark Ciechowski, Clearwater, Fla., made it through the twelve-car field and defeated Mark Mullen in the finals to become the Super Pro Race of Champions winner.  Driving his ’02 dragster with a Chevy 588 engine, he ran a final time of 4.978 seconds at 133.99 mph and brought home a win for his home track, Sunshine Dragstrip.

Palmetto, FL-- Several Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg drivers, went back to their roots Tuesday, and tried the go-karts at Andersen RacePark.

It was part of Media Day for the Honda Grand Prix, which is March 25-27 on the streets of downtown St. Petersburg.

The professional drivers also contributed their skills to the friendly (supposedly) media go-kart competition.  Pinellas Park's Nick Andries was the team professional for Team Ten, comprised of Studio 10's Jerome Ritchey, 10 News Videographer Adam Vance, and 10 Sports Anchor Dave Wirth.  The team finished third.

Pirate Fest to be held Sunday in Bradenton

BRADENTON, Fla.-- Fans wanting to get up close and meet Pittsburgh Pirates players and legends will get their chance on Sunday.

The team will hold its 5th annual Pirate Fest from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. before hosting the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:05.

The event is free and will take place on 9th street West in front of McKechnie Field ticket office.

Current Pirates players and coaches, as well as some of the Pirates' legends will sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

Pirate Fest is open to fans of all ages and will include several activities for kids, along with music.

Fans wanting to attend the game at 1:05 will need tickets.

Manatee and Sarasota counties bid for 2017 World Rowing Championships

Sarasota, Florida -- Drive into Sarasota as you exit off I-75 and University Drive and you are greeted by a sign that says, "Welcome to Sarasota: Future Home of World Class Rowing."

A partnership between Sarasota and Manatee counties may make that vision a reality. Sarasota and Manatee counties have entered a bit to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

Crews can now practice at Fort Hamer. Nathan Benderson Park offers a race course. The course is just short of the 2-thousand meters required for competition but it will meet the requirements once a highway is moved.

Bradenton, FL -- For nearly two decades, fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates have had little to be optimistic about.


But the start of spring training may bring some.


It's one time of the year when the record of every team is 0-0. 


With the Pirates opening camp in Bradenton on Monday, coming off a 57-105 record in 2010, fans may be searching for anything to look forward to.


Pitchers and catchers will hold their first workout Monday afternoon.

Pinellas Beaches, Florida -- At Madeira Beach, bottom fishing is "really good'' for gag grouper in just 35 feet this week on frozen squid and sardines, reports Capt. Dane Karcher of John's Pass.

Karcher has been catching limits of keeper gags up to 30 inches by hitting three to five spots in half-day trips until he finds concentrations, and he said light tackle with 30-pound leaders is producing the most action.

He said if you hit 10 spots during a full day, you'll definitely catch your limit. Gag grouper go out of season Feb. 1 in state and federal waters of the Gulf, but deep-water grouper remain open.

Karcher said Capt. Joey Massano journeyed out to 400 feet, 120 miles, for a 50-pound warsaw grouper, 20-pound kitty mitchells, 20-pound yellow-edge grouper and 12-pound scamp on frozen bait and jigs.

At John's Pass, good-sized trout "all over'' flats around Treasure Island, reports Capt. Dane Karcher, who said Capt. Kellen Anstrum drifting flats in 3-4 feet with Luv Lures or Berkley Gulp! Shrimp (New Penny).
