New shades in place at McKechnie Field

Bradenton, Fla. -- A little less sunblock may be needed on your next trip to McKechnie Field.

New shading material has been installed, to replace metal roofing that was removed during the 2011 season, according to a release from the team.

The awnings cover box seats on the first and third base lines.

The awnings are temporary, as construction on a permanent roof is planned for later this year.

Run to benefit local youth sports

Bradenton, FL -- Mills Elementary School and the Nike Factory Store are teaming up to hold a 5K/1-mile run on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The event will help promote youth fitness and raise money for community sports organizations.

Raymond, the Tampa Bay Rays mascot, as well as the Rays trainer will be on hand.

Registration opens for 23rd Annual Gulf Coast Senior Games

Manatee County, FL -- Registration has begun for the 23rd Annual Gulf Coast Senior Games, a series of athletic competitions held in Manatee and Sarasota counties from Feb. 21 - 26, 2012.

Each year, more than 400 athletes ages 50 and over compete in the Gulf Coast Senior Games. It is one of 19 regional qualifying events across Florida which determine participants in the statewide Senior Games which will be held next December in Polk County.

The Tampa Bay Lighting will host the event for their game on Sunday, Jan. 15 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

20th annual Cyclefest to be held this weekend

Manatee County-- The 20th annual Gulf Coast Cyclefest will be held on Sunday.

The Manatee Sarasota Bicycle Club will offer 15, 35, 62, and 100 mile routes.

The start and finish will be at 8100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The fee to enter is $40.

Early registration extended for Manatee’s first Walk-A-Thon fundraiser

Bradenton – Early registration has been extended to Friday Oct. 21 for Manatee County’s first ever Walk-A-Thon – a three-mile  fundraiser walk through Robinson Preserve to benefit the United Way of Manatee County on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Registration for the non-competitive walk is $20 and registration forms can be found at www.uwmc.net/events    

The walk will begin on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. Those registering the day of the Walk-A-Thon should arrive by 8:30 a.m. to register. Early registrants will receive an event T-shirt and goodie bags.

Event sponsors will also be handing out free food and drinks. Participants will automatically have a chance to win a kayak tour for two, gift certificates to On a Shoestring, a 30-minute massage and more.

McKechnie Field may see $9 million renovation before 2013

Bradenton -- McKechnie Field, current spring home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, could soon be getting a $9-million makeover, if the Pirates get their way. The plan, which projects most renovations would be complete by Spring Training 2013, is currently being considered by local policymakers including Bradenton City Council and Manatee County Commissioners.
