Elementary school to hold Sock Hop

Bradenton, Florida -- Gene Witt Elementary School will turn back the clock for an upcoming event.

The school's PTO will host its annual Sock Hop on Friday, Sept. 28.

The event will include swing tunes, a costume contest, and face painting.

The activities will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Bradenton, Florida -- Two native Mandarin-speaking teachers from China, will be the guest teachers for the 2012-2013 school year.

The two teachers came to Manatee County in early August as part of the Chinese Guest Teacher Program, a collaboration of the College Board and China’s Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Bradenton, Florida -- The Manatee Education Foundation is partnering up with Gettel Automotive Group to give away a 2013 Toyota Prius as a prize for the school district’s top educator who will be named at the EdVantage Education Awards in March 2013. 

In total, the Gettel Automotive Group has pledged to donate more than $53,000 to Manatee District schools for the 2012-2013 school year through the MEF’s Partners in Education Program. This partnership propels Gettel to the inspiring level of a platinum partner with the MEF.

District gears up for 'Food Challenge' during September

Bradenton, Florida -- To help restock the shelves at the Food Bank of Manatee, School District and Manatee County Government leaders are calling on all sorts of local organizations to participate in a “Food Challenge” in which schools, churches, hospitals, civic groups and others set a goal of collecting either 1,000 pounds of food or raising $1,000, or a combination of the two during the month of September.

Manatee County administrators win awards

Bradenton, Florida -- Two Manatee County women have been named "2012 Business Woman of the Year" in two separate categories by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Dr. Mary Cantrell, director of Manatee Technical Institute, won in the education category.

Cheri Coryea, Director of Neighborhood Services for Manatee County, won in the government category.

They were two of a dozen women who received awards, but the only ones from Manatee County.
