School year to begin with new principals, assistant principals

Bradenton, Florida -- The 2012-13 school year begins Monday, Aug. 20 in Manatee County.

When it does, more than a dozen new principals and assistant principals will take over at various schools throughout the district.

Eleven new principals are scheduled to begin at elementary, middle, and high schools.

Twelve new assistant principals will start around the district.

Bradenton, Florida -- More than 200 Tillman Elementary students will receive free backpacks and other school supplies just days before the start of a new school year.

Members of three local exchange clubs and the Family Partnership Center, who donated the items, will distribute them Thursday, Aug. 16 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

They will go to students in grades 3-5.

School begins Monday, Aug. 20.

Bradenton, Florida -- A Manatee County high school principal has been suspended from his position following an internal investigation into his role in an off-campus incident.

Manatee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tim McGonegal announced the decision to suspend Bayshore High School Principal David Underhill without pay for three days after an incident at the Banana Factory nightclub on June 17.

5th Annual Staples for Students school supply drive kicks off

Bradenton, Florida -- DoSomething.org and Staples are teaming up with teen actress and recording artist Bella Thorne for the 5th annual Staples for Students national school supply drive, to help kids in need. 

The drive encourages Manatee County young people to collect school supplies and drop them off at their nearest Staples store now through Sept. 15.

Health department offers free back-to-school immunizations

Bradenton, Florida -- The Manatee County Health Department is offering free childhood immunizations, including back-to-school immunizations, for all children age 18 years and younger.

The health department is located at 410 6th Ave. East. Hours are Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

No appointment is necessary. Appointments are first come, first serve.

To attend school, children must have documentation of proper immunizations on file at school before classes begin.
