The Manatee County NAACP seeks opinions from community on education

Bradenton, Florida -- You are invited to attend the Manatee County Schools' Citizens' Advisory Committee series to voice your opinion on priorities relevant to the Manatee School Board's 2014-2015 Budget and the 5-year Strategic Plan.

The Manatee County NAACP says the goal of the meetings is to include the community's input into the strategic planning processes to give them a sense of ownership in these important endeavors.

The meetings will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the following dates and locations:

Learn all about the School District of Manatee County's Gifted Program by attending a seminar for parents provided by the staff from the Exceptional Student Education and Student Services Department. Participants will find out more about: who to contact at the school for information on the Gifted Program, Gifted Program eligibility, characteristics of gifted learners and more.

School Board of Manatee county unanimously approves 2013-2014 budget

Manatee County, Florida -- With a unanimous 4-0 vote, the School Board of Manatee County approved the $568.3 million budget recommended by Superintendent Rick Mills during a public hearing Tuesday evening.

The approved budget meets the following priorities established by Superintendent Mills in the district’s Fiscal Recovery Plan presented in May:

Manatee High School shines with 4 seniors name National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Bradenton, Florida -- Four Manatee High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the academically prestigious 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring.

Two IMG sisters verbally commit to Vanderbilt

Manatee County, Florida -- IMG Academy’s Khaleann and Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau have verbally committed to the Vanderbilt University Commodores women’s basketball program. The 6-foot-3 natives of Gatineu, Quebec, Canada are set to sign their National Letters of Intent in November.

Manatee County students explore the Smoky Mountains

Bradenton, Florida - Twelve students from De Soto National Memorial's Youth Advisory Council spent a week in the Smoky Mountains connecting with and learning about nature.

The YAC students attended classes and activities at the remote Tremont Institute on the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountain National Park. The 15 to 18 year old students hiked to a waterfall, monitored salamanders, tagged endangered birds and studied the night sky. Many students had never seen a mountain before, never mind the copperheads, bears and white tailed deer they encountered along the way.

Fresh fruit and veggie program directs students to healthy food options

Manatee County, Florida -- This school year marks the fifth year that the School District of Manatee County’s Food and Nutrition Services Department will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The purpose of the program is to increase elementary school children’s consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, to expose elementary school students to new fruits and vegetables and to help elementary schools create healthier school food environments.
