Live music on Holmes Beach

Live music on Holmes Beach

I told you about music on Bradendon Beach, so I'm going to circle back there and take a moment to mention Sharky's Seagrill, purveyors of fine food and live music.

It's right around the s-curve on Gulf Drive, and offers live music several nights a week until 11 p.m. and serves food until midnight.

From there, let's move on to Holmes Beach.

Surprisingly, the first venue you'll find is Hairs to You. Yes, hair. It's a hair salon by day and a beer and wine saloon at night. They offer live music and even karaoke throughout the week in a casual and welcoming atmosphere. I pride myself in being one of the first acts to set up and play in their window stage.

Living on the Island, the question that I get asked the most is “what is there to do around here at night?"

When I first threw my suitcase into the bungalow six years ago, the answer would have been “not much,” but a lot has changed in that time and Anna Maria Island now has a pretty active and interesting night life.

Off the top off my head (and please email me if I’ve missed something)…

Flavors of Tampa Bay: The Sandbar on Anna Maria Island

Flavors of Tampa Bay: The Sandbar on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island, Florida - Beautiful sunsets, great food and a relaxing beach atmosphere, The Sandbar offers this and so much more. Owned by Ed Chiles, the son of the late Governor Lawton Chiles of Florida, this restaurant has been serving up fresh seafood since 1979.

This is what old Florida used to be like, just sit back and enjoy a million dollar view from the Sandbar's deck. Most tables are on the deck while some are right on the beach, but they all have a view of the Gulf of Mexico.

The food is classic beach dining with an emphasis on fresh seafood. There is plenty to choose from.

Dinner Review: Taste of Tokyo

Dinner Review: Taste of Tokyo

Having received conflicting information about the food and service at Taste of Tokyo, Bradenton, I was pleased to have had the rare opportunity to visit this restaurant twice, both for dinner and lunch, sitting in each of the dining areas.  Both experiences were exceptional.

The Food:  Ordering the identical meal for both lunch and dinner, a friend and I shared a feast that included Miso Soup ($3.25/$3.95 Plain/Udon), the Terra Ceia Rolls ($7.95), Spider Rolls ($8.95), Tofu Tempura ($5.95) and a Green Tea ($1.95/$2.95 hot/iced) beverage.  The total averaged $18 per person (w/ tax).
