County seeks input on Community Development Block Grant projects

Manatee County, FL -- The county's Neighborhood Services Department officials are looking for more community input than ever as they decide how they are going to spend this year's $1.9 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

The county is hosting four community meetings to ask residents how they would like to see the money spent to improve their neighborhoods on the following dates and venues:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - St. Petersburg residents are electing four city councilors and will decide a handful of ballot issues on Election Day.

Among the charter amendments: whether to allow port leases of up to 25 years, whether to develop a master plan for the downtown's waterfront and whether to allow for property tax breaks for businesses that create jobs.

The city of Largo is also holding municipal elections Tuesday.

Manatee Legislative Delegation to meet

BRADENTON -- The annual meeting of the Manatee County Legislative Delegation is scheduled for Oct. 27.

It will be held from 8 a.m. until Noon at the Manatee County Commission Chambers, located at 1112 Manatee Ave. West.

The delegation plans to hear more about proposed local bills and constituent issues.

Bradenton, Florida – Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) announced this week that he will host an open house at his new Bradenton District Office next Wednesday, August 24, from 5 - 6:30 p.m.

Manatee cracks down on house parties

Bradenton, Florida -- Rick Scott recently signed HB 105, a law that is designed to curb underaged drinking at house parties. The Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition and local law enforcement are both speaking out in support of the bill.

The law, which goes into effect Friday, July 1, increases penalties for a person in control of a home who knowingly allows a minor to possess or consume alcohol or drugs at an open house party.

Manatee County now accepting apps for job opening

Manatee County, FL -- Manatee County has one opening for a citizens advisory committee that makes recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on matters pertaining to the Palmetto/North Manatee County Enterprise Zone .

The vacant position is for a representative from a non-profit organization that operates within the zone.

The Enterprise Zone Development Agency helps develop and implement a strategic plan aimed at revitalizing areas of Palmetto north of the DeSoto Bridge. It also oversees and monitors the implementation of the strategic plan.

Applications available now for vacated  Myakka City Fire Control District seat

Manatee County Commission is taking applications for a recently vacated position on the Myakka City Fire Control District. There are two years remaining on a four-year term for Seat 2 being vacated by a fire commissioner who has relocated.

The Fire Board has autonomous control over the fire district, with the authority to spend money, incur debt, and hire and fire personnel. The board meets on a monthly basis at a location, date and time that work for all Board members.
