No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Manatee County, Florida -- With building activity up and internal efficiencies on the rise, the cost of doing business with Manatee County is about to go down. Manatee County Commissioners Tuesday unanimously lowered county permitting fees 6 percent.

The lower fees will go into effect Oct. 1.

The lower fees were originally presented in the County Administrator's proposed budget in May and are the result of increased efficiencies in the Building and Development Services Department and a rebounding construction industry throughout Manatee.

Bradenton, Florida -- Two public hearings are scheduled in Bradenton on the city's proposed budget and property tax rate for 2012-13.

The first hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5, while the second will be held Sept. 12.

Both start at 5:01 p.m. at City Hall, located at 101 Old Main Street.

City seeks opinion on clean energy policy

Bradenton, Florida -- The City of Bradenton seeks public input on its clean energy policy.

A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. in City Council Chambers, located at 101 Old Main Street.

The goal is to introduce and develop strategies for energy efficiency and conservation.

Proposed Manatee County budget now available online

Bradenton, Florida -- Next year's proposed budget for Manatee County is now available to view online.

The budget process began in late May when the County Administrator delivered the recommended budget the Board of County Commissioners.

Two public hearings are scheduled for September before the budget is officially adopted for the fiscal year, which begins in October.

Ethics committee: no action against Rep. Buchanan

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House Ethics Committee says Florida Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan omitted information on his financial disclosure forms over four years. The committee said Tuesday that no action will be taken because the congressman corrected the errors.

The committee did not announce its vote, but Buchanan's office said it was 9-0 to end the case.

Bradenton, Florida -- Bradenton mayoral candidate Richard O'Brien kicked off his mobile campaign on his double decker bus Wednesday afternoon. 

O'Brien is one of three candidates looking to unseat Mayor Wayne Poston. Poston is looking to be re-elected for a fifth term. Also in the race are City Councilwoman Marianne Barenbey and political newcomer Travis W. Holliday.
