Coyotes prowling Cortez for domestic pets

Cortez, FL (AP) -- Residents of Cortez are keeping a closer eye on their pets. The reason? Coyotes are believed to have killed about 60 pets over the past few months in this Manatee county fishing village.

Authorities in Manatee County offer this advice: Keep the pets inside and lock up the trash and any outdoor pet food. Most of all, don't feed the coyotes.

Residents have been horrified by the loss of their pets.

Wildlife officials say coyote numbers are not on the rise in southwest Florida. But they are more visible this time of year as adult coyote are pushing their offspring toward independence.

Coyote sightings can be reported to wildlife officials.
