Patrol Officer Phillip Smolinsky named Officer of the Month for September

Bradenton, Florida -- Patrol Officer Phillip Smolinsky has been named Officer of the Month for September 2013.

Early in the moring on August 7, Officer Smolinsky made a traffic stop in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue East in Bradenton. After the stop, the driver and two passengers fled the area. While running, the dropped a semi-automatic handgun in the backyard of a home. The two passengers went into the home and following a brief stand-off, both suspects surrendered to police.

Manatee County, Florida -- IMG Academy’s Khaleann and Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau have verbally committed to the Vanderbilt University Commodores women’s basketball program. The 6-foot-3 natives of Gatineu, Quebec, Canada are set to sign their National Letters of Intent in November.

Manatee County employees kick off volunteer project

Manatee County employees kick off volunteer project

Bradenton, Florida -- Manatee County employees rolled up their sleeves to help make a difference in the lives of people in the community.  The 2013-2014 volunteer project for the United Way of Manatee County is underway.

On Wednesday, employees painted several rooms and mulched the front area of the main Easter seals building. The beautification project represents the huge impact that Manatee County Government helps make in the area by participating with United Way of Manatee County.

Manatee County students explore the Smoky Mountains

Bradenton, Florida - Twelve students from De Soto National Memorial's Youth Advisory Council spent a week in the Smoky Mountains connecting with and learning about nature.

The YAC students attended classes and activities at the remote Tremont Institute on the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountain National Park. The 15 to 18 year old students hiked to a waterfall, monitored salamanders, tagged endangered birds and studied the night sky. Many students had never seen a mountain before, never mind the copperheads, bears and white tailed deer they encountered along the way.
