Volunteers honored for serving city of Bradenton

Bradenton, Florida - It was a big thank you to volunteers who gave 1,850 hours to the city of Bradenton.

Bradenton Police Department honored its Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) at an appreciation breakfast Friday morning. They were recognized for their outstanding service as well as helping the department in several ways, including saving the city about $25,000.

Bradenton, Florida --  A Bradenton Police Department Narcotics Detective has been named a 2013 "Heroes Among Us" by the Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition. 

Detective 1st Grade Michael Skoumal received the award Tuesday morning at the ceremony hosted by the Pittsburg Pirates at the Pirate City Facility. Chief Michael Radzilowski nominated Det. Skoumal for his dedicated service and personal achievement in the high liability specialty field of narcotics enforcement as a DEA Task Force Member.

Roy Richards to be inducted into blood donation hall of fame

Bradenton, Florida -- On Thursday, October 31 a Sarasota resident is being inducted into the Blood Donation Hall of Fame.

In 1947, Roy Richards began donating blood whenever the bloodmobile would visit his workplace in Wisconsin. Soon after, Roy decided that the bloodmobile did not come around frequently enough so he began to travel to the Milwaukee Donor Center, where he could donate more often. When new technologies revolutionized blood banking, Roy eagerly converted to being a platelet donor and was among the pioneers of automated collection donors.

Inaugural festival to benefit Gulf Shore League's goal to become "no-kill" community

Bradenton, Fl. - The inaugural Pussycat Festival will feature a Grammy awarding winning artist to benefit the Gulf Shore Animal league and its historic effort to become a "no-kill" community.

Sophie B. Hawkins will headline the festival on November 9. She'll be joined on stage by Twinkle Schascle Yockim, a Sarasota-based jazz, soul and blues vocalist who has wowed audiences nationwide for 20 years. Kristy Lee, an up-and-coming blues/rock singer known for her booming, deep voice will also perform.

Bradenton, Florida -- In a decision that had to be made quickly, Bradenton Police officer, Master Patrol officer Matthew Palmer jumped into action and may have saved someones life. Because of his bravery, he was named Officer of the Month for October 2013.

Manatee County teacher recognized by Governor Rick Scott

Manatee County teacher recognized by Governor Rick Scott

Bradenton, Florida -- A Manatee County teacher's skills in the classroom are getting her recognized in the state's capitol. 

Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Mara Curran was recognized by Governor Rick Scott for her contributions to learning at Saint Joseph Catholic School. She, along with 14 other Florida educators, received the Governor's Shine Award. 

Curran has been a Catholic educator for 18 years. She was recognized for her work as coordinator of the school's parent-school engagement program.
