De Soto National Memorial closed because of government shutdown

Bradenton, Florida -- All 401 national parks, including De Soto National Memorial are closed because of the federal government shutdown.

The Visitor Center, trails and parking areas will remain closed until the government reopens. All park programs, including kayak programs, and special events have been canceled.

At DeSoto National Memorial, eight employees are on furlough. It hosts 150 visitors on average each day in October. Nationally, more than 715,000 visitors a day frequent the National Park System. That means the NPS stands to lose about $450,000 per day in lost revenue from fees collected at entry stations and fees paid for in-park activities like cave tours, boat rides and camping.

The National Park Service website will be down for the duration of the shutdown because it will not be maintained.
