Police: Tax preparer defrauds client out of $5k
News

Manatee County, Florida -- A tax preparer is accused of taking a client's refund and using it to pay off personal bills.

Officials say Anacelis Vega filed a police report after she was duped out of her tax return of $5,316.

According to the complaint, 34-year-old Kristen Smith of Sarasota electronically prepared Vega's 2010 tax return at her home. Smith allegedly told Vega that her refund would be transferred to a Walmart Money Card. Vega never received her refund, and that is when she made some calls to the IRS.

They told her that her refund was sent to a bank account, which is conflicts with what Smith originally told her.

Vega then filed a report and an officer was able to piece together that Smith sent Vega's refund to the bank, then converted the amount to a debit card to pay some of her personal bills. She then took the remaining balance to a second debit card and depleted the remaining balance.

Smith was arrested on a warrant for scheme to defraud.
