McKechnie Field open after extensive makeover | News
Bradenton, Florida -- McKechnie Field is open after the first major renovation of the historic ballpark since 1993. The improvements were unveiled Wednesday.
The centerpiece of the renovations is a 19,000-square-foot boardwalk spanning the outfield. There are also new group areas with enhanced sight lines to the filed, expanded restroom facilities, new concessions and an enlarged Fan Plaza.
There is also a Boardwalk Barbeque Area which gives grouips of 25 or more an all-you-can-eat picnic with a full view of the field. On the opposite side of the ballpark is the new Left Field Party Deck with a high-end catering menu.
Two new bars are also open at the 90-year-old field. There is a Yuengling Plaza Bar and a Kona Bar open to fans serving beers and cocktails.
"Fans will see a dramatically enhanced fan experience, all while maintaning that old time ballpark charm that we all love about McKechnie Field," says Bob Nutting, Pirates Chairman of the Board.
Pirates Charities raised more than $2,000 by selling individual reserved seats, which were removed. They were replaced by 4,600 new, more comfortable seats. New covered bleachers in left field added 570 seats to the ballpark, expanding the capacity to more than 8,500 seats.
The renovation was completed by local companies from Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch.
The 2013 Grapefruit League schedule features 16 games in Bradenton, beginning Sunday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m., when the Pirates host the Atlanta Braves.
