Commission moves to extend County Administrator beyond 2014

Manatee County, Florida -- Following the County Administrator’s Annual Report to the Board Tuesday, County Commissioners unanimously moved to begin contract extension negotiations that would retain Ed Hunzeker beyond his planned 2014 retirement date.

“(Hunzeker) has accomplished many money saving measures in his time here and he’s given us a peek of an ambitious agenda ahead,” Commission Chairman Larry Bustle said of Hunzeker. “Ed’s leadership is vital. I think it’s a bad time to let him go.”

The Board unanimously agreed with Bustle, authorizing him to enter contract extension talks with Hunzeker, who has been Manatee County Administrator since 2007.

The Board’s motion came on the heels of the County Administrator’s Annual Report in which he outlined a host of major accomplishments by the county in 2012 and set forth a broad scope of work for 2013 and beyond.

Highlights of the report included the County’s success with its new No Kill animal policy, lowered health insurance premiums as a result of county employees’ weight loss of 5.4 tons over the past year, lower Building Department fees and strengthened relationships with neighboring governments and the private sector.

“County Commission policies and the efforts of our remarkable staff have put Manatee County on the cutting edge of some innovative projects and programs that are making a difference in lives,” Hunzeker said. “Counties around the state and the region are looking to Manatee County as an innovator and a leader. We have a clear opportunity to become a leader in other areas not only in 2013 but for years to come.”

The entire report is available on the right side of the page on the County Administrator’s area of the county website, www.mymanatee.org.
