State senator meets with dozens of frustrated homeowners

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida -- Dozens of homeowners in a Lakewood Ranch community met with State Senator Mike Bennett Wednesday night to talk about the issues they've had with the construction of their homes.

Residents in the Willowbrook subdivision said they are dealing with shoddy construction and blame the builder, KB Home. According to homeowners, for years they've struggled with mold, gaping holes, and rotted wood. Some have not had any work done. Of those who have had work done, many say the problems still exist. Manatee County has posted "potential hazard" signs on a number of units in the subdivision.

Over the weekend, homeowners mailed letters to KB Home and also to lawmakers. The meeting was a result of that, with Senator Bennett receiving about 20 to 30 letters.

The lawmaker listened to the group, answered questions, and offered advice. He suggested the homeowners come together and that the HOA demand an independent contractor to do any work moving forward.

Many residents, however, said they do not want to deal with any more repairs. They just want KB Home to buy back their homes.

KB Home did provide this updated statement to 10 News:

"KB Home remains committed to customer satisfaction and we stand behind our product. We were actively making the necessary repairs and then received a claim from the association, which caused some delays on our part as we evaluated the claim. Today, KB Home continues to work closely with the association and building department to reach a resolution and begin the repair process within the next few days."

Through email, the KB spokesperson said the company is not willing to buy back any of the homes.

Senator Bennett said he did speak to someone at KB Homes who assured him someone from the company would be out at the property on Thursday.
