FHSAA may have less say over membership

Bradenton, Florida -- A bill on the Governor's desk would weaken the Florida High School Athletic Association's control. Senate Bill 1704 (HB 1403) is a bill the FHSAA says none of its 695 high school members support.

Manatee High School's head football Coach Joe Kennan is one of many athletic directors who says government should stay on the sidelines.

With 5 championships in 27 years of coaching under him, Kennan says SB 1704 and House Bill 1403 would do more harm than good to high school athletics.

State title for Manatee after shutting out First Coast 40-0

ORLANDO, Fla. -- It was a night to remember for Manatee High School as the Hurricanes won their 5th State Title in Orlando on Friday.

For anyone that saw the game, it was evident that this squad was hungry for a championship, especially after losing in the title game to Plant just two years ago. The last time Manatee won a state championship was 19 years ago until shutting out the 1st ranked First Coast Buccaneers, 40-0, at the Citrus Bowl.

Sandberg born to be Manatee QB

Bradenton, Fla. -- Cord Sandberg was not always a mobile quarterback.  The Manatee junior was first a standout running back.

"I played running back a little bit when I was a little guy," Sandberg said. "The past couple years, I've been playing quarterback. I've learned to like it, and it's fun having the ball in my hands."

The position switch has worked out well for Sandberg.  He has led Manatee to the school's seventh appearance in a state championship game.

Manatee rallies past Dwyer 19-14, advancing to title game

Bradenton, Fl - The Bradenton Manatee Hurricanes rallied late and then their defense made a critical 4th down stop to hold on for a 19-14 win over the Dwyer Panthers, in a Class 7A state semifinal game, Friday night.

Dwyer quarterback Faton Bauta had a big game, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

After Bauta's first touchdown, gave Dwyer a 7-0 lead, it was Manatee's defense that got the Canes on board.   Junior defensive back Willie Smith scooped up a loose ball and ran 52 yards for the score.

Palmetto loses 20-point lead, spot in 5A title

Bradenton, Fla. -- Everything was set up perfectly for Palmetto to reach the state title game for the first time since 1986.  Palmetto was at home.  They had a 20-0 lead.

But Miami Norland had other ideas.  The visiting Vikings rallied for a 35-27 win in the Class 5A state semifinal game.

Tony Thomas scored on a 36-yard touchdown run to complete the rally and give Norland a 21-20 lead.

The Vikings' superstar running back Duke Johnson sealed it with a 72-yard touchdown run.

Manatee storms past Pinellas Park 55-2

Bradenton, FL - The Pinellas Park Patriots, back in the playoffs for the first time in ten years, traveled south over the Skyway Bridge, taking on the highly favored Bradenton Manatee Hurricanes.

Early on, the game was close, with Manatee leading 7-2 after the first quarter.   But then the Canes got things rolling in the second quarter, with quarterback Cord Sandberg, twice connecting with Anthony Lauro, giving Manatee a 22-2 halftime lead.
