Prevent Blindness Florida will conduct the screenings from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Manatee County Health Department.

Health Department to hold wellness screenings

Bradenton, FL -- If you're feeling a little down or under the weather after the holiday season, the Manatee County Health Department will hold wellness screenings in January.

They are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.

For $40, the screening will test your blood pressure, blood sugar, liver, and kidneys among other things.

A variety of other tests are available as well.

Appointments are required.

BRADENTON-- In hopes of improving safety, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office will hand out free bicycle helmets to children in need this weekend.

The event runs from 9 a.m. until Noon on Saturday at Amscot Financial Services of Bradenton, located at 3611 1st St. E.

Amscot Corporation helped provide the helmets.

Law enforcement will also be on hand distributing information on bicycle and road safety.

Manatee County Commission endorses organizational ‘Culture of Health’

Manatee County Commissioners have unanimously adopted a resolution formally endorsing Manatee County Government’s “Culture of Health.”

Employee Health Benefits Manager Kim Stroud told the Board that Manatee County fits into a group of “forward thinking agencies” that have created healthy programs to promote physical activity, healthy nutrition, tobacco cessation and stress management in order to promote a culture of health. Such programs, she said, decrease employee absenteeism, boost employee morale and increases productivity across the organization.

“This resolution is an opportunity to reinforce the commitment this Board has made to employees to promote the culture of health,” Stroud said.

Manatee Government named Healthiest Employer in the Region

Manatee County, Florida -- The Tampa Bay Business Journal has named Manatee County Government the healthiest employer in the region for a business of its size.

The Manatee YourChoice health plan was named tops in the region from among hundreds of employers from seven counties during the Journal’s 2011 Healthiest Employer awards Thursday. The Journal works with HealthiestEmployers.com, an Indianapolis-based research firm focused on corporate wellness. The firm used proprietary technology, wellness experts, physicians, professors, employers and human resource professionals to select the winners.

Finalists were ranked in six categories including Culture & Leadership Commitment; Foundational Components; Strategic Planning; Communications and Marketing; Programming and Interventions; Reporting and Analysis. To be considered for the award, Manatee County submitted a detailed questionnaire about its wellness and health management program.
