School district nutrition director named to national position

Bradenton, Florida -- Sandra Ford, Manatee County School District's Director of Food and Nutrition, has been named to lead a national organization.

She's the new President of the School Nutrition Association, a non-profit organization representing 55,000 school nutrition professionals around the country.

Ford has worked in Manatee County for the past eight years.

Bradenton, Florida -- Health Advantage for Tomorrow wellness screenings will be offered in Manatee County next month.

The screenings, for adults 18 years and older, cost between $15-$40.

The event is scheduled for June 12 at the Manatee County Health Department.

Screenings will be done by appointment only.

County invites public to ‘Spring into Health’

Manatee County, Florida -- A month-long celebration of Healthy Counties, Healthy Families culminates Thursday during a Spring into Health event at Bennett Park.

The free event will be held from 3 – 7 p.m., and will feature healthy activities for families, games, healthy snacks from local vendors and drawings for giveaways including a $100 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

2 positions open on Health Council of West Central Florida

Manatee County, Florida -- Manatee County is accepting applications for two positions on the Health Council of West Central Florida.  

The Health Council consists of 12 members from five counties including Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough and Polk.  The Health Council assesses the health status of area residents; collects and analyzes health care data; and develops strategies with community partners for improving health services. The council is an independent, private non-profit organization governed by the member County appointees.

Bradenton, Florida-- Prevent Blindness Florida will conduct free vision screenings at the Manatee County Health Department.

The event is scheduled for April 19th from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Those who do not pass the screening will be referred to an eye care professional for a full exam.

Bradenton, Fla. -- Grab a napkin and some silverware because the Blake Medical Center, along with the ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation and Environmental Change Coalition), is holding a free tasting event to celebrate the second year of the Healthy Choices Restaurant Program in Manatee County. 

This year's theme, "Taste Around the World", has restaurants bringing healthy menu items with inspirations from places like Peru, Thailand, Greece, Spain and more.
