Bradenton, Florida - A local sports medicine practice is giving away a lifesaving gift to area athletes.

Coastal Orthopedics is donating thousands of dollars worth of sideline concussion testing tools to schools and youth football and baseball leagues in Bradenton that its doctor says can identify concussions in a matter of minutes.

"The average high school lineman takes more than 1,000 hits to the head each season. We want to be sure parents and coaches identify concussions early and safely return players to the game,” Says Dr. Jeremy Ng, a Sports Medicine and Consussion Management Specialist at Coastal Orthopedics.

Dr. Ng is hand delivering King-Devick books to several schools. King-Devick test score sheets help coaches, athletic trainers, parents and medical professionals objectively determine in minutes whether players should be removed from games after suspected head trauma.

“I believe these tools will help not only coaches but players know when it is safe to resume play and when it is time to seek treatment,” says Dr. Ng,  who coordinated with Steve Devick from King-Devick who generously donated over 60 books to Coastal Orthopedics for distribution. Each program can retail for $200 or more.

“When combined with our concussion specific exam and our relationship with local athletic trainers we have the ability to provide the safest and the quickest way to return to activity after concussion,” says Dr. Ng, who also points out the system can be used by children under 10 years of age. Previous testing was geared to older athletes.

“We are proud to help young athletes in our community get the tools they need to stay in the game safely,” says Dr. Ng.
