Fresh fruit and veggie program directs students to healthy food options

Manatee County, Florida -- This school year marks the fifth year that the School District of Manatee County’s Food and Nutrition Services Department will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The purpose of the program is to increase elementary school children’s consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, to expose elementary school students to new fruits and vegetables and to help elementary schools create healthier school food environments.

Students at schools participating in the program will receive a fresh fruit or vegetable in their classrooms as a midmorning snack 4 days a week. Nutrition education will also be provided with the snack that includes information on where the snack is grown, how it is grown, and the health benefits.

Nine Manatee District schools have received funding for the program including Ballard Elementary, Daughtrey Elementary, Manatee Elementary, Oneco Elementary, Orange Ridge-Bullock Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, Rogers Garden Elementary, Samoset Elementary and Tillman Elementary.
