Manatee County, FL-- A new grant given to the Manatee County Health Department can now help apartments and condos to create smoke-free policies, but that's not all! A release about the event says the first five locations to implement smoke-free policies will be featured in a commercial!

The grant, provided by the Florida Department of Health, will provide apartment and condo locations with free "smoke-free" signage, free marketing assistance, free technical assistance with policy and lease language, and access to free counseling and medicine for tenants who want to quit smoking.

Looking for reasons to take advantage of this, aside from all of the assitance and the perk of being featured in a commercial?

Consider that smoke-free policies improve tenants' health and decrease owners' operating costs.

Smoking does damage to those that chose to participate, but it also affects those in surrounding areas.

"...Nearly 60 percent of airflow in multi-unit housing facilities come from other units. So, when your neighbor smokes, you and your family are likely exposed to dangerous second hand smoke," explains Megan Jourdan, the Tobacco Prevention Program Manager for the Manatee County Health Department.

Smoke-free policies also lower turnover and clean-up costs, improve tenant health, and reduce fire risks and insurance costs.

"A smoke-free policy can even be a great selling point," according to Jourdan, "as four out of five people in Manatee County do not smoke."
