Florida Maritime Museum reopens after month of renovations

Cortez, Florida - The Florida Maritime Museum is preparing to reopen!

For the last month, it's been undergoing some revamping and with a new month, comes new renovations!

You can see the changes at the grand opening on Saturday, October 5. You'll get a look at the completed children's room and scavenger hunt. The expansion will explore Florida's greater maritime history, while other sections focus more closely on the personal stories Cortez has to share.

Enjoy some jazz to benefit Meals on Wheels PLUS

Bradenton, Florida - Mark your calendars! You can enjoy some jazz and benefit a great cause in Bradenton this November.

Renaissance on 9th will be transformed into a jazz cabaret from November 16 through November 17 to benefit Meals on Wheels PLUS.

The Linda Baker Band (Eddie Tobin on piano, Mark Gould on bass, Linda Baker vocals), Koko Ray and The Soul Providers, Billie Marcus and The State College of Florida Jazz Ensemble are among several jazz celebrities who will perform at Jazz Express.

International Coastal Cleanup October 5, 2013

Manatee County, Florida -- Help keep Manatee County waters clean and participate in the 2013 International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, October 5th from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Adopt-A-Highway, Road or Shore groups will be doing cleanups at their sites in Manatee County.  Other volunteers can do cleanups by checking in at 9 a.m. at:

Bradenton, Florida -- A Manatee County teacher's skills in the classroom are getting her recognized in the state's capitol. 

Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Mara Curran was recognized by Governor Rick Scott for her contributions to learning at Saint Joseph Catholic School. She, along with 14 other Florida educators, received the Governor's Shine Award. 

Curran has been a Catholic educator for 18 years. She was recognized for her work as coordinator of the school's parent-school engagement program.

Manatee County, Florida -- Local organizations, businesses and neighborhood groups have already raised more than $74,000 and collected more than 10,700 pounds of food as part of this year’s Grand Challenge to restock the shelves at the Food Bank of Manatee.
