Healthy Start Celebrates National Women's Health Week

Here I am on my way to wedded bliss in fewer than two weeks and already the questions begin, "Are you planning on having children?"

When?

How many?

And my personal favorite, "Why not? Lots of women your age are having kids these days."

Sigh...

While I was sifting through the flood of questions that found their way to my email's inbox, I discovered a request from Lisa Ramirez, Resource Development and Project Advisor for the Healthy Start Coalition of Manatee County (AKA Healthy Start and Healthy Start Manatee). They're hosting Get Moving, Get Healthy! The event kicks off National Women's Health Week (May 8-May14), an initiative that engages families, health organizations, businesses and communities in raising awareness of women’s health issues by promoting simple steps women can take to enjoy longer, healthier and happier lives.

Since I moonlight as a yoga instructor, she wanted to know if I was available to teach yoga on May 7 in honor of Mother's Day that weekend.

"No," I answered. "I'll be busy getting married that day, but I'll see if I can find an instructor and get the word out."

Thankfully, she didn't ask if I was planning on having children at my age.

For those who don't know, Healthy Start Manatee is dedicated to ensuring that women and infants in Manatee County have access to prenatal and pediatric health care, as well as parent support to promote healthy birth outcomes, positive parenting and optimal child development.

Participants of Get Moving, Get Healthy! will be provided with free information, immunizations and health screenings and experience relaxing massages and manicures, eat healthy snacks, win great prizes and, of course, take free yoga classes.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate the important role moms play in our families and community" Ramirez wrote. "When we have healthy mothers, there is a much greater likelihood of having healthy children, families and communities. We hope this event will give moms time to enjoy and have some fun, as well as remind them of how important it is to take care of themselves, while they are also taking care of others."
