Lakewood Ranch, Florida --  Lexi Brown is remembered as a person who had a gift of unconditional love and compassion for everyone and everything. That special gift was remembered on Thursday at a birthday party in her honor.

In January, 10-year-old Alexandra "Lexi" Brown was murdered in Ohio while on a trip with her father.

The Broken Egg Restaurant hosted a fundraiser for Nate's Honor Animal Rescue, Lexi's favorite charity. Lexi loved volunteering at Nate's because she loved animals and spent many hours caring for dogs and cats there.

On Thursday, guests wore blue jeans and green shirts in honor of Lexi's favorite outfit.

"Lexi Brown was an inspiration to our organization. Her passion for saving animals  made us realize we needed to have a way to engage all of the children like her in our community, and nurture that passion. We are very lucky to have such a great community partner like The Broken Egg to help us celebrate her life and promote the Lexi's Paw Pals program in her memory,” says Karissa Mayer, Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue’s Director of Operations.

Nate's has a new program called Lexi's Paw Pals, designed to allow children to work with and socialize with dogs and cats at the shelter.

Ten percent of the day's salees went to the rescue.
