District: Manatee County students set world record

Bradenton, Florida -- Manatee County students set a Guinness World Record at Sugg Middle School on Thursday.

The students collected more than 29,560 pounds of plastic bottles to be recycled, topping the previous eight-hour period record of 19,400.

Guinness will be validating the record to make it official on a date in the near future, according to a press release from the district.

The push for the record was part of the district's 2012 Recycling Round-Up.

Manatee County, Florida -- Keep Manatee Beautiful is inviting citizens to tree plantings planned for National Arbor Day on Friday, April 27. The plantings described below will recognize the value of trees to the 155 communities from Florida and more than 3,400 communities nationwide that are currently a Tree City USA.

Locally, Tree City USAs include Anna Maria, Bradenton, Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, Palmetto, and Manatee County as a Tree County USA.

Florida-Friendly Family Festival this weekend

Palmetto, Fla. -- The Florida-Friendly Family Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Manatee County Fairgrounds.

The event includes activities for kids, eco-workshops, and entertainment for children of all ages. Master Gardeners will demonstrate recycling with a "Trash to Treasures" sale and will be selling plants as well. 

The festival runs from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Admission is free and bring your old shower head and get a free new water conserving model!

Palmetto ― On Jan. 31, the Board of County Commissioners, the Mayor of Palmetto, and the Chamber of Commerce will be joining the Extension Service staff and the Master Gardeners for ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new site and to thank the many donors that made the site possible. 

The gardens demonstrate different ways for Manatee County residents to be more successful gardeners and to make their yards more Florida-friendly.

Bradenton, FL -- Multiple venues will host separate family events on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, as celebrations about the mythical mermaid take hold at the South Florida Museum and Robinson Preserve, a site operated by Manatee County Natural Resources Department.

FPL to trim trees around Manatee County

Bradenton, FL -- For the next six to eight weeks, expect some Manatee County neighborhoods to be a little louder.

A Florida Power & Light contractor will be trimming tree branches and limbs, as well as clearing overgrown vegetation near the Manatee and Braden rivers.

If access to private property is required, a contractor will contact the individual homeowner directly.

County looking for master gardener volunteers

County looking for master gardener volunteers

Bradenton, FL -- The Manatee County Extension Office is searching for gardeners to join the county's Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program.

Master Gardeners provide leadership and service to area residents by answering homeowner gardening questions, conducting plant clinics, creating demonstration gardens, and helping with community landscaping.

Manatee County currently has more than 80 active members.
