No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Summer fertilizer ban ends next week in Manatee County

Manatee County, Florida -- The partners of the Be Floridian fertilizer education campaign want to remind county residents that the countywide summer ban on the use of nitrogen fertilizers ends on Sept. 30.

Beginning Oct. 1, homeowners and business owners may once again apply fertilizer containing nitrogen to their lawn and landscape plants.

Manatee Natural Resources hosts geocache hunt

Bradenton, Florida -- Manatee County Natural Resources Department will launch its new Taking Flight GeoTour through Manatee County’s preserve system Monday, Aug. 20.

Participants can use their GPS devices to find hidden “geocaches” throughout Manatee County’s publicly owned preserves. Each geocache location has an educational focus and the entire tour itself is themed around birds, their habits, and habitats. Melissa Cain Nell, NRD Volunteer and Education Division Manager, described the tour as a high-tech treasure hunt in some of Manatee County’s most beautiful locations.

City seeks opinion on clean energy policy

Bradenton, Florida -- The City of Bradenton seeks public input on its clean energy policy.

A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. in City Council Chambers, located at 101 Old Main Street.

The goal is to introduce and develop strategies for energy efficiency and conservation.

Beach advisory lifted for Palma Sola South

Bradenton, Florida -- The Manatee County Health Department has lifted the advisory for Palma Sola South that was issued on July 20.

The health department says marine water bacterial indicators are now complying with those recommended by the EPA.

Manatee County District sets world record

Manatee County District sets world record

Bradenton, Florida -- The Manatee County School District recently collected 29,560 pounds of plastic bottles on April 26 and have been informed by the Guinness World Records organization they officially set the world record for "Most Plastic Bottle Recycled" in an eight-hour period.

Sugg Middle School held the 2012 Recycling Round-Up where the district worked together with event sponsors and the community.

The previous record was held by a group a schools in China who collected 19,400 pounds of plastic bottles in the same amount of time.
