'And the winner is...' Film Friday Series begins in January

Bradenton, FL -- The South Florida Museum announced it will salute Hollywood’s biggest successes during award show season as Academy Award© Best Picture winners from the past 80 years are featured as part of the “And the Winner Is...” Film Fridays series.

The new Film Fridays series will run most Friday evenings, Jan. 6 – March 16, 2012. All screenings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the South Florida Museum’s all-digital Bishop Planetarium Theater located at 201 10th Street W. in downtown Bradenton.

Free movie to be shown at McKechnie Field

Bradenton, FL -- People in Manatee County will get a unique opportunity to watch a classic movie presentation from inside a baseball stadium.

On Friday, Dec. 16, McKechnie Field will host the Realize Bradenton organization's showing of the 1954 movie "White Christmas."

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with a pre-show performance by the Manatee Players' "White Christmas" cast.

The movie will be shown at 5:15 p.m.

Admission is free and concessions will be sold inside the stadium.

Manatee County Government invites the public to the first ever Carols in the Courtyard Friday, where there will be food, beverages and crafts for sale to benefit United Way of Manatee County.

The event will be held Friday, Dec. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. in the courtyard of the Historic Courthouse at 1115 Manatee Ave. West. Several local groups will perform for 30-minute intervals at the following times:

Sarasota native and RCA recording artist Schascle “Twinkle” Yochim and Larry Hoppen, founder and voice of the Supergroup Orleans, will join Nick Miller & The Gathering’s set scheduled for 1 p.m. at the new Bradenton store, 2111 Cortez Road West.

Manatee County, Florida – Some of the area’s biggest celebrities will receive a hometown day in the sun during an upcoming regular meeting of the Manatee County Commission.

Platinum selling rockers We the Kings and “Hell’s Kitchen” contestant Jamie Gregorich are scheduled to attend the Oct. 11 Board of County Commission meeting to receive proclamations in their honor.

The band will receive a proclamation naming Oct. 11 “We the Kings Day” in Manatee County. The band’s hit single “Check Yes Juliet” has garnered 12 million views on YouTube and brought the band platinum record status in 2010 for selling one million copies.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is encouraging residents who irrigate their lawns to take advantage of the summer rains and “watch the weather, wait to water.”

During the summer months of June, July, August and September, yards need no more than 3/4 inch of water every 2 to 3 days. If your lawn has received enough water from rainfall, then you can turn off your irrigation system and turn it back on when needed. The simplest way to determine if your yard needs water is to look for these visual clues:
