Anna Maria Island: Beach wedding capital of Florida
Anna Maria Island: Beach wedding capital of Florida

This week begins the rush of wedding season this year, and I’ll be providing music for two weddings per week until the end of summer. While the season begins in February and ends in November (That’s right folks, ten months of weddings), it’s now entering the height of the season. Anna Maria Island hosts an estimated 500 wedding per year on this seven-mile stretch of sand.

It’s easy to understand why people pick our little island.  It has old-world charm,  a laid-back vibe, the prices of restaurants and venues are reasonable and the beach is a stone’s throw from everywhere. We don't have towering buildings or private beaches, so anyone who gets here first can set up an arch and chairs, say some vows and voila, they're married.

A word to the wise: to plan the perfect Anna Maria Island (AMI) wedding, get there first. Most local small business owners book weddings early and often. Feel out the people who are eager to make your day perfect, and keep it your day. Planning well in advance gives you the freedom to shop, because you'll get first crack at the best venues and vendors before they're snatched up.

Perfect, of course, is subjective. Be sure you're looking for a flip-flop wedding when you come here. There are several beach-side pavilions and wonderful waterfront resorts and residences that are very relaxed. I've found the weddings most suited to the island are planned as a vacation for your guests during the week prior. The wedding day actually becomes a grand finale to what was a nice time for everyone getting to know whichever half of the couple they just met.

The Official Guide to Anna Maria Island is a great place to start, when planning a wedding or vacation.

One thing is for certain: if you do get married here, you'll love this place forever. Just walking on the beach is enough for most people, but if you're walking down an aisle made of sand or standing at the end of it waiting for the most beautiful girl you've ever seen...a part of your heart will never leave.
