Help MTI students collect socks for “Sock it to the Troops” project | Community Spirit
Bradenton, Florida -- Cosmetology SkillsUSA students at Manatee Technical Institute are currently collecting donations for operation “Sock it to the Troops” and they need your help! The students are asking for help from the community in their endeavor to support the troops while they are away from home.
From now until May 15, the department will be collecting new socks in black, tan, or grey (no white, please).
This is the first year for the cosmetology students to be involved in the project. Over 85 students are working on donations and would like to make this a new tradition.
“Since this is our first year, we don’t know how many pairs of socks we will collect. Our goal is 500 pairs but we’re hopeful for more! We love to help out with the troops,” said Judy Millard, MTI Cosmetology instructor, in a release.
According to MTI, cosmetology students Tamara Montgomery and Erin Deans met with Susan Chandler, founder and president of the Southwest Florida Chapter of Blue Star Mothers, to spear-head this SkillsUSA project. Blue Star Mothers is a non-profit, non-political organization that supports children in the military and promotes patriotism.
On May 15, students will present the socks to the Blue Star Mothers organization.
Student project leader Montgomery said, "I believe that God will supply all our needs. The troops are supplying our needs by fighting for our country, so we want to do this for them."
Anyone wishing to donate new socks for the troops may bring them to the MTI Main Campus at 5603 34th St. W., Bradenton.
