Manatee County's credit ranking affected by debt ceiling debates

Manatee County's credit ranking affected by debt ceiling debates

Bradenton, Florida -- Debates in Congress over the debt ceiling are already having a trickledown effect at the local level.  Last Friday, the credit rating agency, Standard & Poors’ (S&P), decided to place the US Government’s AAA-rated credit obligations on a ‘credit watch with negative implications.’

This action by S&P on the federal obligations is expected to cause S&P’s AAA rating of Manatee County’s investment portfolio to similarly be placed on a negative credit watch, due to the portfolio’s investments in federal obligations.

“S&P uses a rating matrix that exaggerates risk and is disproportionately negative,” says R.B. “Chips” Shore, Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller, “Of our over $700 million investment portfolio, only $1.5 million or  0.22% of the County’s total investments is associated with a lower rated fund, that being the Florida State Board of Administration’s Fund B. There is no way Manatee County should be on a negative credit watch.”
