Manatee County drivers love manatees

Manatee County drivers love manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Manatee County residents sure love manatees.

Of all the specialty license plates sold in the county this year, the Save the Manatee one was the most popular. Close behind were plates dedicated to fellow sea creatures, Protect Wild Dolphins and Helping Sea Turtles Survive.

The ranking is based on statistics from the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles website and includes data up until November.

Statewide data for 2010 is not yet available, but in 2009, the University of Florida was the top-selling license plate.

Drivers who want to buy specialty plates pay an extra fee when registering their vehicles, which helps support their cause.

Teens help give family a home makeover

Bradenton, Florida - A group of Manatee High School teens are spending their Christmas Eve hard at work. The group is helping to reconstruct a home and a family's life.

When Edna Greo, the owner of a 1,200 square foot Bradenton house, steps back inside her home on New Year's Eve, she probably won't recognize it. "With this project, we're doing everything - the flooring, lighting, electrical, plumbing," says Mary Elizabeth Woodward, 11th grader at Manatee High School.

"We're remodeling a new home for a family in need," adds Daniel Beeman, 12th grader at Manatee High School.

Dozens of businesses have donated $70,000 in supplies, plus labor, for this extreme home makeover. The young hands nailing, cutting and tiling belong to the Manatee High School Key Club.
