It started around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Whitfield Estates neighborhood of Bradenton.

Chris Somers was on her way home from work when she noticed a man outside a house in her neighborhood.

He "had both hands pushing against the door," Somers said.

Eventually, neighbors say the alleged burglar made his way to the backyard.  That's when another neighbor, Lance Holder, 42, confronted the man with an unloaded shotgun.

The man then shot Holder in the shoulder.  Holder was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

Palmetto students get surreal in St. Pete

Palmetto students get surreal in St. Pete

Palmetto, Florida -- After receiving grant money for arts programming for students, Palmetto High School has been making the most of their Art Department's new resources. For starters, a portion of the $3,823 grant from the Leslie Margaret Weller Arts Education program funded a fun-filled field trip to the world-renowned Salvador Dali museum that just re-opened in St. Pete.

The surrealist painter's masterpieces fill the uniquely architectured space, allowing students to see some of the world's most celebrated art in person on their recent visit. The PHS art students will even apply his style in their own classrooms this semester, when an upper level 3-D class starts crafting a ceramic totem pole using a surrealist art style, like Dali's, that will ultimately be welded onto a fence pole permanently at the end of the project.

Brooks is accused of stealing liquor from a neighboring Sweetbay Supermarket, and then carjacking a vehicle in the drive-thru lane of the McDonald's restaurant.

"He told me he had a gun and that if I didn't do what he said he would blast me," recalls 32-year-old Cheryl Figueroa, a mother of three.

The suspect forced Figueroa to take him to an area near Mixon Fruit Farm, where he exited the vehicle.

"He told me he had a gun and that if I didn't do what he said he would blast me," recalls a still shaken Figueroa.

Manatee Sheriff's deputies say the man and a second suspect had just robbed a Sweetbay Liquor Store across the parking lot from the McDonald's. The two men ran in different directions, one jumping into Figueroa's mini van armed with a gun.

"All I told him is please don't hurt me, I have three kids," said Figueroa.
