Buccaneer talks to youth today

Bradenton, FL -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and the Dairy Council of Florida are taking part in an assembly at Bashaw Elementary School today from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. as part of "Fuel Up to Play 60," a national in-school health and wellness program that encourages kids to eat well and exercise.

The program is designed to combat childhood obesity and help today's children develop healthy eating and physical activity habits to last a lifetime.

Students can participate in fun challenges with their classmates along the way to have the chance to unlock cool content and earn badges, and even get rcognized on the Fuel Up To Play 60 website.

Stolen yacht runs aground in Manatee County

BRADENTON, Florida (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says an abandoned and stolen 40-foot yacht found run aground along Florida's Gulf coast over the weekend.

Coast Guard officials say the yacht was not intentionally run aground.

The yacht's owners said the boat had been stolen, and law enforcement has taken over the investigation.

Buchanan holds town hall meeting in Bradenton

Bradenton, Florida -- It's been two weeks since the tragedy in Tucson that left six dead, a dozen others hurt, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords who survived a bullet through the brain.

The violence hits home for many lawmakers just like her, who use public forums to try to connect with their constituents.

"First, let me say in terms of Gabby, she was in my class in 2006 and is an incredible woman," said Rep. Vern Buchanan (R) - Sarasota.

The congressman says his colleague Giffords is missed on Capitol Hill after being shot in Arizona while holding a public forum.

"Incredible woman who was considering a run for the Senate, everybody loved her on both sides of the isle and our thoughts and prayers go out to her," Buchanan said.

Bradenton woman addicted to eating couch cushions

Sarasota, Florida - When Adele of Bradenton introduced herself to the world through the TLC show "My Strange Addiction," she was picking a pillow apart.

The 30-year-old woman says she has been eating the foam from her cushions since she was 10 years old, when her cousin introduced her to it.Twenty years later, Adele has eaten 200 pounds of foam, or roughly 7 couches and 2 chairs.

Adele's gastroenterologist, Dr. Christopher Olenec of Sarasota's Digestive Health Center, says he's seen his fair share of unconventional objects.

"Paper clips, pens, pencils, rulers, razor blades," listed Olenec.

Pinellas Beaches, Florida -- At Madeira Beach, bottom fishing is "really good'' for gag grouper in just 35 feet this week on frozen squid and sardines, reports Capt. Dane Karcher of John's Pass.

Karcher has been catching limits of keeper gags up to 30 inches by hitting three to five spots in half-day trips until he finds concentrations, and he said light tackle with 30-pound leaders is producing the most action.

He said if you hit 10 spots during a full day, you'll definitely catch your limit. Gag grouper go out of season Feb. 1 in state and federal waters of the Gulf, but deep-water grouper remain open.

Karcher said Capt. Joey Massano journeyed out to 400 feet, 120 miles, for a 50-pound warsaw grouper, 20-pound kitty mitchells, 20-pound yellow-edge grouper and 12-pound scamp on frozen bait and jigs.

At John's Pass, good-sized trout "all over'' flats around Treasure Island, reports Capt. Dane Karcher, who said Capt. Kellen Anstrum drifting flats in 3-4 feet with Luv Lures or Berkley Gulp! Shrimp (New Penny).
