County to hold press conference on Lake Manatee Dam repairs

Manatee County, Florida -- The Manatee County Government will host a press conference Thursday to inform the public of measures that are being taken to repair a damaged area around the Lake Manatee dam.

The press conference will begin at 4 p.m. on Feb. 14 in the first-floor Commission Chambers of the County Administration Building. It will air live on Manatee Government Access (MGA) channel locally on Bright House channel 622, Verizon channel 30 and Comcast Channel 20 and online.

Honor Animal Rescue "stretched thin" caring for animals from cruelty cases

Lakewood Ranch, Florida- Animal Rescue groups in Manatee County are feeling overwhelmed Thursday night, as they receive more animals needing help.

Nate's Honor Animal Rescue in Lakewood Ranch says it's taken in 100 dogs and cats in the last week. Karen Slomba, Honor's Associate Director, says the last 14 animals come from two separate animal cruelty cases in the last two days.

Manatee County closing 30 polling sites

In Manatee County, 30 polling sites are going away, because the county says they're not handicapped accessible.

Instead, the county plans to open five polling locations in larger, more accessible areas in addition to three "early voting" locations.

But some of the 207,000 voters in Manatee County are not happy about the changes.

Manatee Co. calls for independent audit of Animal Services

Bradenton, Florida -- Manatee County Commissioners have launched an independent audit of Animal Services' handling of Napier's Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary.

Deputies recently removed more than 300 animals from Napier's for poor living conditions. The animals included about 200 dogs, plus cats and farm animals.

Seventeen of Alan Napier's horses have found a new temporary home at Whispering Ranches.

Missing man in Manatee County

Manatee County, Florida -- Manatee County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man who went missing Saturday morning. 

Reportedly, 78-year-old Richard Earich was last seen leaving his home on Imperial Circle in Palmetto early Saturday morning. He was driving a 2008 silver Dodge Dakota with Florida Tag 529EU. 

Earich's wife says he never goes anywhere without telling her and his current whereabouts are unknown at this time.

Napier fallout: 'Hands are tied' when inspecting rescue groups

Manatee County, Florida -- Adoption agencies are still picking up animals at Manatee Animal Services rescued from Napier's Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary on Wednesday.

Deputies and volunteers removed more than 300 animals from Napier's this week, most of which were dogs. Investigators also found a shallow gravesite on the property with the remains of 20 dogs.

"They're pretty much a mess and in need of TLC," says Kristi Dorman, director of the Humane Society of Sarasota County.

Manatee County, Florida- After Manatee County Sheriff's deputies found a shallow grave with the remains of eight dogs, they suspect there could be more animals buried in the yard at Napier's Log Cabin Horse and Animals Sanctuary off State Road 64.
